After three successive years of low yield, 2019 returned to more balanced yields in the vineyard. The average rainfall was low in the winter months, but, to compensate, throughout the year the Douro, and specifically the Cima Corgo sub-region, benefited due to two factors: the fact that the summer months were exceptionally cold and, in addition, the rain on 26/27 August was very opportune, allowing the ripening of the fruit to end.
In Vale de Mendiz the harvest began on the 2nd of September in good conditions and the last grapes arrived in the first week of October.
Every year is remembered for distinct and unique reasons, and 2019 will surely be remembered as a year with incredible natural musts, balanced acidity , and a very cool climate, reminiscent of the elegant year 2008 – the perfect conditions in which the Niepoort style flourishes!
Tasting Notes
The appearance is marked by a wonderful dark purple border and a great depth of color. The aroma is fine and moderate, with primary notes of dark fruits and some spices. The true style and potential of this wine come together on the palate, with a wonderful integration of dark fruits and a grainy tannic structure; An extraordinary balance between volume and elegance, resulting in an impressive aftertaste. In short, the primary fruit in the mouth may be appealing at this stage, but it is the balanced tannic structure that indicates the great aging potential of this wine in the future.
Vinification
All components of the 2019 Vintage were trodden in granite lagares with 100% stems. The wines were transferred shortly after the harvest, aging in the Douro, in barrels, during the winter. They were later transferred, in March 2020, to the cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia.
