Alexandre de Almeida, founder of the hotel chain of the same name, the oldest in Portugal, created the Bussaco Wines in 1917, when, after numerous trips to European hotels, namely the French ones on the “Côte D’Azur”, he realized the concept of Hotel Winery. He then adopted the idea of creating his own winery in Palace Bussaco, starting the vinification of what would become the glorious “Bussaco wines”.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, one of the most interesting pages of Portuguese wine was born. The wine that would become an icon, the target of coveting, but which was always kept intentionally out of the limelight, was born. Its creator, Alexandre de Almeida, adopted the concept of combining luxury hotels with a winery with its own wine. If we look back from its first harvests, we realize the importance of this icon, which was served to kings, queens and heads of state, as evidenced by the menus, proudly kept at the Hotel Palace Bussaco. Buçaco wines were just like that: objects of worship, limited to very restricted circles, to the elite. Its fantastic and noble labels maintain to this day the symbol of its nobility.
Vinification
Buçaco was, and still is, always vinified in the same way and with the same methods as in the past. The fact that the grapes originate from the regions of Dão and Bairrada guarantees a brilliant wine, which evolves nobly in the bottle. These wines ferment and age in French oak barrels for 12 months.
Tasting Notes
It is a complex and luxurious white wine, with an open aromatic character, dry and mineral profile. With soft notes of nuts and vanilla, it features citrus fruits in its bouquet and aromas of tropical fruits lightly spiced with aromas of lemon peel and citrus acidity and balanced.
